It depends on what activities and how "wrong" the shoes are. For example, going jogging in high heels is probably not a good idea. But if the shoes are comfortable for the activity in question, then probably you're not going to do much lasting damage; it's more of a gimmick to get you to buy a special pair of shoes for every possible activity.
