you can switch it anytime, but it is better if you stop and do it while in nuetral if it has a two setting 4x4 drive, i.e. 4Hi and 4Lo, then you can simply switch into 4hi whenever you want. you should only switch into 4lo when you are in neutral though.
Are you in neutral ? No in reverse.
no it cant its a push button switch it has 4x4 2x2 and neutral
Lock your hubs and put the car in neutral, then push the 4X4 button, same thing with low range
turn on the engine, shift into neutral, engage the 4x4, shift into drive.
You must be in neutral to switch it into 4hi
The Owners Manual sez to be in Neutral when changing from one mode to the other.
Yes, switch the transfer case to neutral.
the neutral safty switch is located in the trans range switch if you have an aw4 auto trans replace or clean and reinstall the switch
asuming it hasn't been tampered with, if its a standard put it in neutral then pull up on the 4x4 shifter 1 position for 4hi you are now in 4x4, to get out put it in neutral again push down on 4x4 shifter then put it in reverse, go a few feet. you are now out of 4x4
If it starts up in any gear, manual transmissions does not have a neutral safety switch.
The neutral safety switch is inside the transmission, on the valve body. It is called a TRS (transmission range sensor).
With the engine running , and your foot on the brake pedal , shift to neutral , select 4x4 low and then put transmission in gear ( for use on surfaces that allow " slippage " such as gravel etc . ) To select 4x4 low the transmission must be in neutral to engage / disengage
