It is common in certain SSRI's and other 3rd gerenation medication like seroquel and Zyprexa to slow down your metabolism and I would definetly have your Thyroid checked once a year if you are gaining weight if diet and exercise do not control weight gain.

∙ 13y agoXanax, like all benzodiazepines, wreaks havoc on the gut. I took the drug for a short period of time and gained weight inexplicably. There are GABA receptors (these are what benzos attach to in order to numb you out) all over the body and all through the stomach. So the medication attaches to these receptors and there are consequences. These drugs are terribly potent- they are not 'harmless and non-addictive,' no matter what your Dr. might say.
