Let’s begin the story of Ravana. Before we start talking about Ravana, let's understand some facts and stories which you have never read before. Ravana was born to the sage Vishrava and the Asuras clan princess Kaikasi.. Villagers from Bisrakh in Uttar Pradesh claim that Bisrakh was named after Vishrava, and that Ravana was born there. Ravana's paternal grandfather, the sage Pulasya, one of the son of Brahma, and one of the Saptarishi (seven great sages).. His maternal grandfather was Sumali (or Sumalaya), the king of Lanka and the son of great warrior Sukesha. Sumali had ten sons and four daughters. Sumali wished for Kaikasi to marry the most knowledgeable person, so that his lineage can also be knowledgeable., so as to produce an exceptional heir. He rejected the kings of the world, and married his daughter to the sage vishrava. Ravana performed penance on Mount Gokarna and won boons from Brahma. Ravana was blessed with a boon that would make him invincible to all the creations of Brahma, except for humans. One of the most popular images of Shiva is called "Ravananugraha", which was popular in the Gupta era. It depicts Ravana beneath Mount Kailash playing a veena made out of his head and hands, and strings made out of his tendons, while Shiva and Parvati sit on top of the mountain. According to scriptures, Ravana once tried to lift Mount Kailash, but Shiva pushed the mountain into place and trapped Ravana beneath it. For a thousand years, the imprisoned Ravana sang Shiva Tandava Stotra, a hymn in praise of Shiva, who finally blessed him and granted him an invincible sword called chandrahas and a powerful linga (Shiva's iconic symbol, Atmalinga) to worship. Ravan has many qualities, he was known as ruler of the whole word at his time. He also had mastery over every veda and many scriptures. He was not only an ayurvedacharya, he was also a musician and dancer. He had expertise in many weapons and astra. Many bramhins believe that it was he who invented bhavishya shatra. In some accounts, Ravana is said to have had Shukracharya, the priest of the Asuras, as his minister, and in other accounts, Brihaspati, the priest of the Devas. One account narrates how Ravana ordered Brihaspati to recite the Chandi stava (mantras of Chandi), more specifically the Devi Mahatmya, in order to stave off defeat. According to the Krttivasa text, Ravana arranged for a peaceful yajna, and invited Brihaspati to start the recitation of Chandi. Worship Ravana is worshiped as one of Shiva's most revered followers, and he is even worshiped in some Shiva temples. Ravana is worshiped by the Kanyakubja Brahmins of the Vidisha region, who see him as a savior and a sign of prosperity, claiming Ravana was also a Kanyakubja Brahmin. Thousands of Kanyakubja Brahmins of the village Ravangram of Netaran, in the Vidisha District of Madhya Pradesh, perform daily puja in the Ravana temple and offer naivedyam or bhog (a ritual of sacrifice to the gods). King Shiv Shankar built a Ravana temple in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The Ravana temple is open once a year, on the day of Dashera, to perform puja for the welfare of Ravana. Ravana is also worshiped by Hindus of Bisrakh, who claim their town to be his birthplace. The following temples in India are for Ravana as a Shiva Bhakta. Both texts mentioned that Vishnu and Shiva are minor deities instead of the Lords of the Universe as popularly known by worshippers:" Vishnu and Rudra (Shiva) are known even to the Rig Veda but as deities of no special eminence. It is only after the Vedic age that they became , each for his own worshippers, undisputed Lords of the Universe…..The Pali Pitakas frequently introduce popular deities , but give no prominence to Vishnu and Siva. They are apparently mentioned under the names of Venhu and Isana, but are not differentiated from a host of spirits now forgotten. ….The suttas of the Digha Nikaya in which these lists of deities occur were perhaps composed before 300 B.C. "- Sir Charles ElliotGautama Buddha in Hinduism is viewed as an Avatar of Vishnu.In the Puranic text Bhagavata Purana, he is twenty fourth of twenty five avatars, prefiguring a forthcoming final incarnation.The text says that his teaching was to mislead "demons". I am not sure why that myth was created.A number of Hindu traditions portray Buddha as the most recent of ten principal avatars, known as the "Dasavatara" (Ten Incarnations of God). The ten incarnations of Vishnu are: Matsya (fish), Koorma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (the man-lion), Vamana (the dwarf) Parasurama (the angry prince), Rama (the perfect human), Krishna (the divine statesman), Buddha and Kalki (the redeemer of righteousness in the kali Yuga, who is yet to appear).The Buddhist Dasharatha Jataka (Jataka Atthakatha) represents Rama as a previous incarnation of the Buddha as a Bodhisattva and supreme Dharma King of great wisdom.However, the Jataka mentioned that Krishna was a past life of another person. It is Sariputra, the Buddha's chief disciple.An influential Vaishnava poet Jayadeva Goswami (13th C AD), in the Dasavatara-stotra section of his Gita Govinda, includes the Buddha amongst the ten principal avatars of Vishnu and writes a prayer regarding him as follows:O Keshava! In the Hindu faith, Hanuman and Ganesha are two gods not afflicted by Shani. There is also a belief that all the planets are under the control of Hanuman's tail. Whoever worships Hanuman is granted fortitude and strength. He is considered to be the lord of Mars. Mars is considered to be the Senapati of the army of gods. In human body, Mars is symbolized in the form of blood. In the Ramayana,Hanuman is said to have rescued Shani, that is, the planet Saturn, from the clutches of Ravana. In gratitude, Shani promised Hanuman that those who prayed to him (Hanuman) would be rescued from the painful effects of Saturn, which in Hindu astrology, is said to produce malefic effects on one's life when one is afflicted "negatively" with Saturn. Another version of the encounter between Lord Hanuman and Shani Bhagavan is that the latter once climbed on to Lord Hanuman's shoulder, implying that he (Hanuman) was coming under the effects of the influence of Shani. At this, Hanuman assumed a large size, and Shani was caught painfully between Hanuman's shoulders and the ceiling of the room they were in. As the pain was unbearable, Shani requested Hanuman to release him, promising that if a person prayed to Hanuman, he (Shani) would moderate the malefic effects of his influence on that person; following this, Hanuman released Shani. One more version of the story behind why Lord Shani stays away from those who remember the Lord Ram's name. Once Lord Hanuman was sitting silently absorbed in deep meditation of Lord Rama. Lord Shani passed by and he felt to tease Hanuman. He started teasing Hanuman by pulling his tail, and pinching. Hanuman warned him to go away as he is his Guru's (Lord Sun) son, and so he respects him. When Shani did not hear, then Hanuman started to give him a good thrashing. In the end, Shani pleaded to leave him and Hanuman took a promise from him that Shani will never ever go near a devotee who is meditating on Lord Rama. There is a spiritual interpretation of the relation between Lord Hanuman and Lord Shani. The former is said to be a symbol of selflessness, while the latter is symbolic of instant Judgement based on past and present karma. Thus, to counter the karma borne out of selfish action, one must be humble like Lord Hanuman. This is particularly true for those who are said to be experiencing the evil effects of "elnati shani"(in tamil) ,"Sadhe Sati" - a period of about seven and half years when Saturn (Lord Shani) is supposed to afflict the sign in which "planet," the moon is placed in the natal chart of a person.
