The mood of the story Dr. Heidegger's Experiment ranges greatly throughout the story. The beginning of the story has a subtly excited mood, amping up to ecstatic, and then back down to disappointment.

The mirror, in literal terms, is an object in which we can see our own reflection. But Dr. Heidegger also sees in his own mirror, the images of his deceased patients. The mirror symbolizes his past failures and those patients he could not save. This symbol is a key to the character of Heidegger, who is aware of human limitations that we could not be young again even if he could be.

In this short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the main character (Dr. Heidegger) claims to have found water from the Fountain of Youth, which he offers to share with four friends who have been invited to visit him. The friends all drink from it, determined to get a second chance at youth and not make the same mistakes they made back then. But the irony is they do in fact make those mistakes, revealing their faults and acting just as foolishly in his study as they acted in life; and the supposedly magic waters have not changed anything for them after all. This leads them to believe they need to find the location of the Fountain and drink more from it-- perhaps the next time, things will go better. (Of course, there will be no third chance, which the Doctor knows; and he also knows his friends will never find the Fountain of Youth.)
