Organs may sometimes have two (or more) consoles. This is more common on large instruments but smaller organs sometimes have dual consoles. This is done for several reasons:
In the case of large, mechanical action organs, dual consoles are fitted because the primary console (or keydesk) is by necessity not movable. A movable console is provided in this case by fitting the mechanical action with an auxiliary electric electric action to which the secondary console is connected. Thus the secondary console can be moved to whatever location is desired for concert or other performance purposes. This is also done on extremely large organs with electric action due to the fact that the main console is too massive to be moved.
In large or oddly shaped buildings a second console is provided to allow the organist to be closer to the choir, other performers or clergy.
In buildings with more than one organ a central console is provided to control all of the organs simultaneously.
In very large organs, tuning keyboards are sometimes contained within the instrument although these are usually rudimentary and can not be considered complete consoles.
During the theater organ's heyday, dual consoles were provided to be used by two organists. Often the second console had only "dummy" stop controls to prevent conflict between the organists registrations and eliminate overly large switching systems.
