Chromosomes are found only in the nucleus of the cell. Although they are actually observed as chromatinthroughout most of the cell's life the chromatin does condense into chromosomes during mitosis/meiosis.
The membrane bound nucleus is an organelle that controls the cells growth and reproduction. It also has chromosomes that contain the genetic information vital for reproduction of cells.
Prophase- first and longest stage of mitosis in prophase, the chromosomes condense, the nucleus and nucleolus disappear. The centrioles move toward opposite sides of animal cells. and the spindle begins to form and attach to the chromosomes.
Normally, for most cells the nucleus would be found in the center, and all cells have a nucleus, which contains DNA on chromosomes

In an area inside of the nucleus, called the nucleolus, Dna and its associated protiens wait until mitosis or mieosis to condense and form chromosomes.
DNA forms nucleosomes (beads on the string) by combining histone proteins, nucleosomes condense into chromatins before it forms Chromosomes
