Be sure the cooling fans are functioning when the ac is running.
Its just there to let you know that the engine is running at a normal temperature and isn't overheating. If your engine starts to overheat, you can tell then do something about it. Pull over and check, let it cool before proceeding to a garage, before it is too late and the engine is destroyed.

Depends on the engine but severe engine damage will start to occur almost immediately. It will run a few minutes until it starts to overheat then the engine will seize. It will not take long to destroy the engine.
Many engines have an automatic shut off when the engine becomes too hot. Once the engine cools down it may also be equipped with an automatic startup.

Check the coolant level. The 3400 engine is know to have head gasket problems. Sounds like you have a faulty thermostat. Its nothing expensive on hard to replace.
You have a broken serpentine belt. Replace it.
Bad engine cushions can make the engine shake. bad spark plugs cause malfunction as the car starts running.

You can do serious damage to the catalytic converter if the check engine light starts to flash.
