If you're going there with your own skates; Ice Skates (to skate in), Towels/Tissues (to clean your skates afterwards), Skate Guards (to protect your skate's blades) and perhaps thick socks if necessary. If you're going without your own skates, you'll need to bring warm clothing anyway (eg; gloves, jumper, jacket etc). Skates will be provided at the ice rink for you to use, so don't worry about needing to buy a pair if you don't have any already (as they are very expensive and you might want to give skating a go before you buy some skates).
For a beginning figure skater you should simply start off with a jacket, snowpants, and a pair of gloves. Most skating rinks allow you to rent skates and take begginer lessons.
As you progress in skating you need a lot of things. But to start, skates, guards, flexible clothing, gloves, and a rag to wipe off your skates is all it takes.

Nowadays, not much, but originally roller hockey equip was made to vent, with lots of mesh and space for air to flow through (as roller didn't have the ice to cool down a player) Recently ice hockey equipment has been made with similar venting systems to cool down a player and because of the decreased weight without sacrificing strength.
There are photos of women using ice hockey equipment from 1890. The first women's ice hockey games were played in the late 1890s/early1900s.
Skates, socks, hockey socks (a.k.a. legwarmers XD), jocks, knee pads, hockey pants, jersey, neck guard, helmet, mouthguard, chest protector, and elbow pads are needed in hockey, but more equipment is needed for goalies.
