An example of primary succession would be Hawaii. It used to be an island of bare rock, but primary succession lead it to be colonized with communities of plants and animals.
Getting more in depth: First of all, lichens had colonized the island and break the rock down into soil. Soon, other plants such as moss begin to appear in the area, because there is enough soil for them to survive. When those organisms decompose, that also results in the creation of more soil. Eventually, larger and larger plants appear, killing off smaller plants when they absorb the sunlight from higher up. Animals will move to the area to create a complex ecosystem.
