Our machine datum is referred to as G53 and the working datums are the datums around the part that we can select that we can make all our dimension's stem from, them being X0 Y0 and Z0, we can refer to them using G54, G55, G56, G57, G58 and G59. If these are not enough to refer to you can add more such as G54.1 or G54.5.

You will always sate what datum you are using at the start of each programming sequence so the machine knows what datum to use for each tool/process.

There are several methods that you can set the work shift offset. The common method we use at Albany is to put the machine into manual mode (MDI) and take a small cut on the Z and X axis. Then go to work shift offsets by pressing the offset function key twice then select work offsets. Set the axis to zero which will then record the work shift offset. To allow the reading of the offsets we must use a G10 code within the program it will read the distance between the machine datum (G53) to our working datum (G54, G55, G56, G57, G58, G59), setting the work shift value. It will also include an L2 command that will set the standard work offsets. Following from this line off code we would copy the co-ordinates recorded in the work shift offset page.
