If the question is correctly understood, one must first understand that the difference between the natural and the spiritual world is so vast the carnal mind cannot comprehend it. The abyss or hades or hell is in the spiritual world and not contained by anything natural as men understands it. Hell is, the bible states able to expand itself daily to receive those who would go there. According to prophesy, Jesus did not descend bodily into the pit, but indeed, hell moved up to greet him at his comming. Here are some scriptures that address these issues: Ps 16:10, 45:15, Is 5:14, 14:9, Prv 27:20 and Mr 27:52. The commonly accepted understanding is that Jesus died to pay for sins, and that the cost of sin is eternal damnation in hell. Through taking on our sin he relieved us of our debt, but he himself then had to suffer the eternal consequence of these actions. The question then becomes, "Why isn't Jesus still in hell." The answer to this can be somewhat in-depth, and is entirely speculative, because it isn't directly discussed in The Bible. The concept of infinity is much better understood today, but basically it says that an infinite being (God being the only one known, of which Jesus is a part) can do something literally forever, and then move on and do other things.
