Slaked lime is much more alkaline and effective at reducing acidity quickly - it is Ca(OH)2

whereas powdered limestone is CaCO3 and not as alkaline/basic. CO2 is also given off when the limestone reacts with the acid. Water is given of when slaked lime reacts.

Mathematically it takes 100 g of limestone to 73g of HCl (as an example) where it would take only 74g of slaked lime per 73g HCl.

Slaked lime works faster to neutralize acidic soil because it is already in a hydrated form, allowing for quicker reaction with the soil. It also provides an immediate source of calcium which helps improve soil structure. Additionally, slaked lime is more readily available for plant uptake, making it a more efficient option for remedying acidic soil.

Explain why powdered limestone is also used in the chimneys at power stations?

Powdered limestone is used in power station chimneys to remove sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the flue gases produced during combustion. When sulfur dioxide reacts with the limestone, it forms calcium sulfate which can be easily removed, reducing air pollution. This process, known as flue gas desulfurization, helps to comply with environmental regulations and minimize the emission of harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.

Explain how limestone purifies the iron?

Limestone is added to the iron ore during the heating process of iron production. The limestone decomposes to form lime, which helps to remove impurities like silica from the iron ore. This process, known as fluxing, helps to purify the iron by forming a slag that floats on top of the molten iron and can be easily removed.

Calcium carbonate has a formula CaCOะท. Explain what this formula means?

The formula CaCO3 means that each unit of calcium carbonate consists of one calcium atom (Ca) bound to one carbon atom (C) and three oxygen atoms (O). This arrangement forms a compound known as calcium carbonate, which is commonly found in nature as the main component of rocks like limestone and marble.
