During the Spanish-American War, the Americans made attacks on Spain's Pacific possessions in the Philippines. Thus, when the Philippine Revolution occurred, the Americans were already involved, and this lead to the Philippine-American War.

The Spanish-American War was essentially caused soon after the American warship Maine exploded in Cuba's Havana harbor in 1898. The American newspapers seemed to be caught up in a "yellow journalism" project trying to bring the U.S. government into a war with Spain which managed Cuba at the time. This would provide us with governing the largest island in the Caribbean Ocean. This was done by the U.S. government, using the death of about 256 American sailors who died in that explosion. The war lasted about 4 months before the Spanish government surrendered both Cuba and the Philippines to the management by U.S. government. This lasted for many years after the war was over. However, the controversy was whether the Maine was truly sunk by an explosive mine placed outside the ships hull by the Spanish, or was it an internal explosion triggered by something from within the ship. This wasn't solved until recently.

Years later there was a secret commission who investigated the explosion. Without any decision the ship was removed from the harbor and sunk in very deep waters. Further investigation recently done for a documentary eventually showed that the ship probably exploded in the harbor due to a design flaw in the ship that placed an engine boiler near one of its ammunition storage lockers, and was definitely an explosion from within, and not from a mine that exploded outside the ship.

What caused the end to the cattle boom and cattle drives in the mid-1800's?

Actually that's when it all really began to take off, not when it ended. Cattle drives soon ended in the late 1800's to the early 1900's because of fierce winter storms, barbed wire, drought, overgrazing, and the near extinction of the population of Longhorns originating from Spain and developed in the wilds of southwestern America.

What did the north gain out of reconstruction?

The North did not gain much out of reconstruction. They did win the war and help to end slavery. However, reconstruction was not very successful and the north soon lost interest. This caused the south to regain control of their own states. While slavery was ended, African-Americans were still treated badly and held no rights.
