Listing and clumping is meant for explanatory/informational text. The idea behind listing and clumping is to brainstorm ideas on a topic at one time (list). Once all the ideas are listed then clump like ideas together (clumping) as the basis for writing each paragraph. Each clump can be labeled with it's own main idea. With elementary students, use post it notes for each listed idea and then the students are able to manipulate their ideas and remanipulate them when clumping like ideas together for potential paragraphs.
The list and clump technique involves making a list of ideas or information related to your topic, then grouping similar items together (clumping) to identify key themes or categories. This method helps organize your thoughts before writing, making it easier to develop a coherent structure for your piece. By visually representing your ideas in this way, you can identify connections and patterns that will guide your writing process.
