Windows Explorer is the application that displays the contents of folders and drives on the computer. By manipulating the icons within windows explorer, you tell Windows what to do with the actual files. Explorer.exe is another part of Windows, the shell, or the program that maintains the desktop and interface of the system.

when you have a computer then you obviously use your computer. when you turn on your computer after it says. "Loading your personal information" then you go to your desktop and everythings are loaded means "Start Menu, Desktop Items, Folders...etc.." yes this is all the fucntionality of the windows explorer if you end the "explorer" process from the task manager then you won't be able to see your start menu even you can't open your folders yes opening folders and start menu these are the important fucntions of windows explorer. when a folder stucks then windows says that the "Windows explorer is not responding" so that means all the files and folders are opened in Windows Explorer. I hope you got what Windows explorer does.
