An electron has 1/1836 the mass of a proton. Also, the chemical functionality of the particles is much different. The proton, located in the nucleus, generally is not displaced in the course of a chemical reaction and is therefor used to identify the element. The atomic number is the number of protons in an element. The electron, on the other hand, is the primary vehicle by which chemical reactions occur, being frequently exchanged between atoms. The two species have equal, but opposite charges, the electron carrying -1e, the proton carrying +1e.

The most important similarity is the equal magnitude of their charges. This is the foundation of neutrality of an atom. Any imbalance in proton and electron count leads to electric charges on the atom.
