By cutting the rail line, the Soviets prevented any ground transportation from reaching the city. The only method of getting goods there was through aircraft. |}

In 1948 and 1949, the Soviet Union blockaded Berlin to land-access by Western nations as a protest to Western policy. The Soviet Union sought to gain control over West Berlin through various means; the West denied the Soviets (and their allies) access to it. Thus the Soviets intended to starve out the West Berliners through the blockade.
