Balboa
The explorer who claimed the South Sea (Pacific Ocean) for Spain was Vasco Núñez de Balboa in 1513. He was the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean from the Americas.
Magellan was an explorer born in Portugal, but sailed for Spain. He was the first European explorer to circumnavigate the world. He named the Pacific Ocean Pacific. Balboa was a Spanish explorer who first sailed the Isthmus of Panama and claimed it for Spain. He was the first to see, not cross, the Pacific Ocean which at that time was called the Ocean Sea.
The Bay of Biscay is to the north of Spain. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean borders Spain on the northwest and southwest. The Bay of Biscay lies south of the Celtic Sea.

Spain never claimed or controlled all of any continent. They had a major presence in South America, Central America, and the southwestern part of North America. They also had island colonies in the Carribean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.
