Compost or slow release organic fertilizer is what is best for grapes (Vitis vinifera).

How big is a gooseberry?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The fruit, borne singly or in pairs at the axils, is a berry with many minute seeds at the center. A gooseberry may be green, white (gray-green), yellow, or shades of red from pink to purple to almost black. Fruits of the European gooseberry may be very large, like a small plum, but are usually 1 inch long, less in width. American gooseberry fruits are smaller (to 1/2 inch), perfectly round, all becoming pink to wine-red at maturity. Skin color is most intense in full sunlight. Berries generally drop when overripe. The fruit has a flavor all its own, the best dessert cultivars as luscious as the best apple, strawberry or grape.

Why are gooseberries called gooseberries?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The origin of the English word 'gooseberry' [Ribes uva-crispa] has topological origin. The generic is the simple joining of the words 'goose' and 'berry'and the shape of fruit globose varying in color with a dry petals at the apex that look like goose head .There's no consensus as to why the two words are joined. But one believable explanation emerges from the history of foods in the United Kingdom as a common berry used by commoners to make juice and syrup for jams or jellies easily digested. Gooseberries have been used in a green sauce of butter, sorrel juice, and sugar for boiled leg of lamb, goose, and mackerel at least since the time of the reign [March 8, 1702-August 1, 1714] of Queen Anne [February 6, 1665-August 1, 1714].

Some opine that the word came into English by way of the Dutch, French or German languages. Those who opt for a Dutch origin trace the English word back to 'Kruisbezie'. Those who opt for a French origin backtrack to 'groseille'. And those who opt for a German origin track back to 'Krausbeere'. Of the possible sources, a French origin has the persuasive link back to the Latin grossularia.

And the gooseberry is a relative of currants. It's even possible to form the hybrid Jostaberry [Ribes x culverwelli, R. nidigularia, R. x nidigularia, R. nigrum x uva-crispa] from gooseberry and blackcurrant [Ribes nigrum].

Where does the saying playing gooseberry derive from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Since I'm from the US, and "playing gooseberry" is apparently a UK expression, I had never heard of it before. But I did look it up and the results of my search are in the link below.

when you're hanging out with more than one friend, and they have all the fun while you sit in the back disappearing. trust me, it's not nice. especially if you're hanging out with lovers. hope that helped. :)

Yeah well I am from the UK - basically it's applied to someone who is with a couple of people who maybe would prefer to be on their own, for the usual boy/girl reasons - for instance if you're out with your mate and he starts chatting someone up then you might find a reason to excuse yourself and leave so as not to "play the gooseberry" - maybe its too subtle for you Americans (only joking!)
