They're usually sold as kiwi fruit. They come from New Zealand where the kiwi is both an iconic bird and the the nickname for people from that country. It's also considered to sound more appetizing than "gooseberry."
Kiwi. The fruit not the bird. The birds must be also edible but i think is prohibited to kill them. New Zealanders eat much the same food as most western-style nations. New Zealand exports a lot of butter and lamb's meat. Kiwi fruit may not be originally from New Zealand; it's a relatively modern name brought on by retailers who wanted a name more exotic-sounding and less communist-sounding than 'Chinese gooseberry' which was how I knew the fruit in the 1950s (we had a big tree at school).

Chinese Gooseberries are native to north-central and eastern China are more commonly known as Kiwifruit. Note: Some people may know of them as "kiwis", this is the name for one of New Zealands native birds, and the nickname for New Zealanders. It is not the correct name for the fruit.
