If you post something on someone's wall ANYONE can see it. If you message them no one can see it.
If you compose a message from your Inbox then it is private. If you post something on someone's wall it is not.
One cant edit a sent inbox message on Facebook. One simply has to send an edited message and explain where the error came from. Facebook doesn't have a way to edit a sent inbox message as of yet.
You inbox someone by messaging them. If you inbox someone his/her message will go to his/her inbox.
Because they want to know that you've read the private message but do not want to show the message publically.

If writing someone that you are not friends on Facebook they will still get the message. The message sometimes go the "other folder" and not the "inbox folder".
