Facilitated diffusion Facilitated diffusion in cell membrane, showing ion channels and carrier proteins Facilitated diffusion (or facilitated transport) is a process of diffusion, a form of passive transport facilitated by transport proteins. The facilitated diffusion may occur either across biological membranes or through aqueous compartments of an organism. Polar molecules and charged ions are dissolved in water but they can not diffuse freely across cell membranes due to the hydrophobic nature of the lipids that make up the lipid bilayers. Only small nonpolar molecules, such as oxygen can diffuse easily across the membrane. All polar molecules should be transported across membranes by proteins that form transmembrane channels. These channels are gated so they can open and close, thus regulating the flow of ions or small polar molecules. Larger molecules are transported by transmembrane carrier proteins, such as permeases that change their conformation as the molecules are carried through, for example glucose or amino acids. Non-polar molecules, such as retinol or fatty acids are poorly soluble in water. They are transported through aqueous compartments of cells or through extracellular space by water-soluble carriers as retinol binding protein. The metabolites are not changed because no energy is required for facilitated diffusion. Only permease changes its shape in order to transport the metabolites. The form of transport through cell membrane which modifies its metabolites is the group translocation transportation.

Why is an animal the best means of transport in hilly areas?

Animals are often the best means of transport in hilly areas due to their ability to navigate rough and steep terrain where vehicles may struggle or be unable to go. They can carry loads and traverse narrow paths with ease, providing access to remote locations. Additionally, animals such as mules and horses have evolved to handle challenging landscapes, making them reliable companions for both people and goods in such environments.

What are the limits to diffusion as a means of transport for living organisms?

Diffusion becomes ineffective for larger distances or larger organisms because it is a slow process that relies on random movement of particles. Additionally, diffusion is not efficient for transporting materials against a concentration gradient, such as from low to high concentration. In larger organisms, diffusion is often supplemented by other transport mechanisms like circulatory systems to overcome these limitations.

Why are Elephants used for transport in Thailand?

Elephants are used for transport in Thailand for many reasons. First, their incredible strength allows them to carry heavy weight. Elephants also have the ability to navigate through heavy terrain and dense forest. With a lot of training, an elephant can become quite tame which generally makes them safe to work around people.

Do furbys come with names?

Yes it does. Its name is featured in Furbish, if you want to know its name, tickle its tummy 3 times, then pet its head. It will happen to say its name. What are the names? Here is the list:Ah-May (means "pet" in Furbish)A-Loh (means "light" in Furbish)A-Tay (means "hungry/eat" in Furbish)Boh-Bay (means "worried/worry" in Furbish)Boo (means "no" in Furbish)Dah (means "big" in Furbish)Kah Dah (means "me big" in Furbish)Kah (means "me" in Furbish)Doo-Moh (means "please" in Furbish)E-day (means "good" in Furbish)Koh-Koh (means "again/more" in Furbish)Loo-Loo (means "joke" in Furbish)May-May (means "love" in Furbish)May-Lah (means "hug" in Furbish)May-Lah Kah (means "hug me" in Furbish)Mee-Mee (means "very" in Furbish)Nah-Bah (means "down" in Furbish)Dah Noh-Lah (means "big dance/party" in Furbish)Noo-Loo (means "happy" in Furbish)Toh-Dye (means "done" in Furbish)Toh-Loo (means "like" in Furbish)Toh-Loo Kah (means "like me" in Furbish)U-Tye (means "up" in Furbish)Way-Loh (means "sleep" in Furbish)

How did oceans and seas help the Roman Empire?

They provided a faster and greater means of transport in a pre-mechanical transport era. This facilitated trade and defence.

Facilitated diffusion sentence?

Facilitated diffusion is a type of diffusion specifically for larger molecules, to help them cross a selectively permeable membrane with the help of integral proteins that act as carriers. Facilitated diffusion is a passive process, i.e. it does not need energy/ATP.

What does facilitated mane?

facilitated means to make easier, or help with

What is meant by passive transport of material across a membrane?

"Passive" mean that it does not require energy, therefore the passive transport of material across the membrane means that it can transport the material (cells or whatever) without the function of energy across the membrane.

Is facilitated diffusion is an active transport?

The name itself indicates there difference. Diffusion occurs without any other active participant/free flow diffusion is called Transport diffusion. Diffusion occurs with help of other active participant is called Facilitate Diffusion

What do processes of active transport and facilitated transport have in common?

I'm not exactly sure... but both move from low concentration areas to high concentration areas. So...I'm im guessing they both diffuse into a membrane. Don't think I'm smart..I just have this for homework!!! =) hope this helped!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are slightly right. Both move from low concentrations to high concentrations. Active Transport however requires energy as ATP whereas diffusion is a passive process. Hope this helped :)

Why does active transport allow cells to accumulate substances in high concentrations where as passive means of transport do not?

Active transport uses energy from ATP to carry substances such as glucose to areas where it is required through the use of transport proteins. Whereas, facilitated diffusion is a passive process by which molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration and it also depends on kinetic energy. Meaning that the distribution of molecules by facilitated diffusion will be random, whereas, active transport will have control over the direction of the concentration gradient.
