Many factors indeed!

A computers hardware can influence performance or limit it. An example would be that a motherboard can handle 6gb/s transfer speed, but the hard drive can only handle 3gb/s.

Also, the amount of software and files can influence performance. If software is limited and files are few a computer could potentially be fast. But a computer that has been loaded down with files and software, like a man with a backpack full of concrete, its going to go slow.

I'm sure there are many other factors.. but that's all i have.

Im glad someone asked this question. There are so many things that can effect a PC's performance. However here are the main and most common reasons.

1.) Low amounts of Ram

2.) A slow Processor

3.) A hard drive with low RPM transfer rates

4.) Having a virus

5.) Junk files

6.) Registry errors

These are your main factors that effect performance the most. While many share the same signs they all are fixed in their own way. Don't always base a Laggy or slow computer to a computer virus. It CAN be one but chances are you have a fragmented hard drive and registry with a bunch of junk files slowing you down.

Main factors affecting computer performance are:

  • processor's speed
  • quantity of RAM memory
  • quantity of free space on hard disk
  • fragmentation of hard disk
  • speed of hard disk
  • number of processes running in background

In games, additional and very important factor is graphic card's speed.

There are many factors that affect computer performance. The most noticeable factors are those that shave off milliseconds of system delay. Generally, this means higher speed hard drives (preferably Solid State Drives), faster RAM and FSB, and faster CPU cycles and multiple cores. For gaming, a high performance GPU with lots of RAM will also have a very positive effect on performance.

I answered a similar question recently. The answer:

Your processor perhaps first and foremost. The processor's speed and power will directly influence anything and everything you do on the computer, and has a substantial effect on the speed and "zippyness" of a computer. Clock speed (x.xGHz) is important, but a lot more goes into this. Power efficiency, the number of cores, processing efficiency, etc. Having multiple cores enables more and more seamless multitasking, but keep in mind that multi-core processors tend to have weaker per-core performance than lower # core processors

Your RAM is important too. Having enough RAM increases multitasking stability and speed. You don't need the fastest RAM on the market, as most CPUs only support mid to upper mid-range RAM. You can't really get too MUCH ram, but its very easy to get too LITTLE.

Storage is vital. Your hard drive will determine loading times and boot times more than anything else. 5400 RPM hard drives will crawl. 7200 is the standard, and will net you a decent all-range performance. HDD manufacturers have been good at squeezing every drop out of their drives. Solid State Drives (SSD) are becoming increasingly dependable and affordable, and offer exponential performance over standard hard drives.

Keeping the number of applications running and the number of start-up processes on your computer to a minimum will also help. Keep your computer clean on the software side. Use various optimization and cleaning software (Glary Free, CCleaner, Wise Registry / Disk, Defraggler just to name a few)

Your processor, RAM, graphics card can affect your computer performance. These all don't matter too much unless if you're playing games that demand alot from your computer. In those games, your graphics card makes a huge difference in the performance.
