Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 4 in E Minor was the last of his written symphonies, which he composed between 1884 and 1885. It is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, a contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, triangle, and strings.

The work was premiered to a public audience in Meiningen on October 25, 1885. Critic Eduard Hanslick was quoted, upon hearing the first movement, as saying "For this movement in this performance I had the feeling that I was being given a beating by two incredibly intelligent people."
