The battle of Knoxville on Nov.29,1863
Total American deaths in Vietnam from 1959 through the end of 1963 were 195. Therefore the total by Nov. 1963 would not be more than that and possibly somewhat fewer. Reference: http://www.militaryfactory.com/vietnam/casualties.asp#13
Rolling Thunder; Linebacker; and Linebacker II fought in the skies over North Vietnam. Most of the battles in Vietnam were not large, like Patton fighting Rommel. Most of the fighting was a series of small actions and assaults on firebases. The most memorable battle was the Tet Offensive, but it was not really one battle. It involved an assault on the US Embassy in Saigon, an uprising in the Mekong Delta, a hardcore attack on Hue, and much more. The battle of Ia Drang Valley (Nov 1965) was one of the first really large battles. Casualties were huge. The battle of Khe Sanh (Nov 1967) involved 35,000 NVA against the US Marines. Another large battle in Khe Sanh in April 1968. Hue, Feb-Mar 1969. Hue (again) April 1972. Central Highlands March 1975 (US soldiers not involved). Hue (again) Mar 1975 (US ground forces not involved).
