The oldest church in Britain is probably St. Peter's-on-the-Wall at Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex which dates from the 7th Century.

When one discusses the oldest still standing place of Christian worship in Britain there is no definite answer.

There are three churches that have stood vertually unchanged since their dedication in the 7C.

The two that really can share the honours are St Peter's -on- the- Wall and the simple church of Escomb just outside Shildon in County Durham.

Escomb was dedicated in the year 650AD and much of the church was constructed out of local Roman brickwork taken from the fort.

Even Bede based in Jarrow mentions Escomb in his history of Britain,so we have actual written historical truth of Escomb claim to being Britains oldest church.

The third church or Monastic abbey is Deerhurst on the Gloucester Tewkesbury road.

Due to the reconstruction of the minster over the many phases only parts of it date back to the early 7C but it's antiquity cannot be denied.

It's a photo finish really between St Peters and Escomb but we have actual written evidence from one of Britains greatest early historians in Bede that 98% of the building now standing in Escomb dates from 650AD.
