Fascism is a radical right-wing belief that all individual should conform to rigid social norms, especially those that support the predominant economic, political and religious institutions. This typically means a dictator who collaborates with the wealthy and powerful, as Hitler did. Fascists do believe in private ownership of property.
Communism is a left-wing belief that private ownership creates power structures that bring about oppression. Communists content that if everything is held by the community (i.e., the government), it will not create the same type of greed and abuses of power.
Communism and fascism are both radical views - but they are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Confusion occurs because communist systems frequently become fascist. This happens because communist leaders come to power declaring that they will protect the rights of the poor and weak, and treat everyone equally. Unfortunately, they quickly become dictators and create a governmental system that protects their monopoly on power... just as the fascists do.
