A series of military events which included Union general Sheridan to overcome the South's position in Five Forks Virginia. With Sheridan's success, General Grant attacked Petersburg, a Confederate city that laid between it and Richmond. Confederate entrenchments which had protected Richmond during the course of the war, no longer had enough soldiers to man the defences. Thus Grant had a clear path to Richmond. News of all these battles reached Richmond in time for the top Confederate leaders to escape.
Grant's strategy was based on his knowledge that the Army of Northern Virginia should be defeated, not the capture of Richmond. His strategy was also based on the fact that the Union had overwhelming advantages in manpower and materiel resources that the Confederacy could never match. As an aside, US President Lincoln always believed the capture of Richmond was vital. If Grant could defeat Lee's Amy of Northern Virginia, surely Richmond would soon be captured.

The 1864 Overland campaign was designed to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia, however, although Grant's assaults in Virginia cost the Union extremely heavy casualties and also created Confederate casualties, there was no decisive and major victories for the Union. Ultimately General Grant used a siege against Petersburg and Richmond. The heavy pressure that General Grant used against the Virginia Confederates, helped General Sherman's Atlanta campaign and his March to the Sea. With Lee outnumbered in Virginia, Grant's operations prevented any Rebel reinforcements to be sent to stop Sherman in the Deep South.
