It is important to understand all the stages of sex, so one can see HOW the "final stage" is achieved. Though some researches claim there are as many as seven stages, I will stick with the commonly accepted Four Stages:

There are Four stages, according to sex researchers:

1. Desire - This is the first sign that a person is ready for sexual intercourse, at least physiologically. It can be triggered by the sight, thought or even sounds of something arousing, and not necessarily sexual. In humans especially, odd things, such as items of clothing, smells, like food, touch, even pain, can be linked mentally to arousal. This is why so many people develop "fetishes", or obsessions with things that have little or nothing to do with human sexuality, except that it arouses them.

2. Arousal (Also known as excitement) - During this phase, lubrication may begin, especially in men, who tend to become aroused more quickly. Swelling of the genital tissues usually also occurs. In males, the penis becomes erect and in females, the vagina widens, but again, some people experience arousal, with little of the physical signs of it. This often occurs in people with deformities in the genital area, women right after childbirth or those with hormone problems or simply because of aging.

Blood pressure and heartbeat also go up, in anticipation of intercourse.

2. Plateau (Usually when Intercourse occurs, but not always) - Stimulation of the genitals usually begins and is the highest state of arousal before orgasm. It can be reached and lost several times before orgasm OR without orgasm occurring at all. Stimulation can occur in many ways and does not always involve the genitals. It may be done with fingers, hands, objects, or in rare cases, mentally. There is a rhythmic movement which further stimulates the nerves in the genitals, and other areas of the body, such as the anus and nipples, in both sexes. During this time, lubrication increases dramatically, but varies widely in amount, even in the same individual. It can be affected by many things, such as hormone level, a woman's place in her menstrual cycle, stress, feelings, such as guilt, or even how much one partner is attracted to the other.

For both sexes: Breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure further increase, sexual flush deepens, and muscle tension increases. There is a sense of impending orgasm. The male's penis becomes larger and the pre-ejaculate emerges. The testes draw closer to the body. In women, the vagina lubricates more and widens more, as the uterus draws into an upright shape. All these changes are to facilitate fertilization of the egg, if orgasm occurs.

3. Orgasm: The culmination of the Plateau phase - Few people know that male and female orgasms are, physiologically, almost identical. The muscles around the genitals (the pubococcygeal or PC muscles) contract at a rate of about every 0.8 of a second, 5-12 times, or more. Women usually have more contractions. While semen is released in the male, females often refer to a "Female ejaculation", which involves the release of a large quantity of lubricant. Some women do not experience this, and this is also normal.

4. Resolution and refractory period (for men): During this stage, blood pressure and heart rate drop BELOW normal and eventually return to normal or close to it. The whole body sweats (including palms of hands and soles of feet). A massive release of endorphins creates a sense of well-being or even euphoria, not like the intensity of the orgasm, but enjoyed by some people even more than the orgasm itself, since it usually lasts longer. Depending on the person and the experience, it could be as short as 5 minutes or as long as hours. It is interesting and sad that in those who do NOT experience orgasm, the blood pressure takes much longer to return to normal. In those who frequently have sex, but do not reach orgasm, there is a danger of developing hypertension.

In the woman, the cervix opens to allow passage of the sperm, for about 20 minutes, then returns to its normal state.

- this is a "resting" time, especially for males, during which maintaining arousal is almost impossible. It can last anywhere from a minute (for females especially) to 24 hours (usually for males who are past their "sexual peak", which usually occurs in the late teens).

During this time, though a man may be able to achieve an erection, he cannot sustain it, or it will not be hard enough to allow intercourse. This can be frustrating, so both partners should know about it, not blame anyone and find other ways to pleasure one another.

Women, however, may be able to reach orgasm and go back and forth between plateau and orgasm several times, with almost no pause, or a very short one. The term for this is usually "Multi-orgasmic" and does not necessarily occur in all women, or happen every time for women who can experience it. There areactually a very few men who can achieve this as well, though it is rarely discussed.
