The travel time from earth to Ceres if you traveled at the speed of light?

The distance to Ceres varies depending on the relative positions of Earth and Ceres in our orbits. As of April 25, 2010, at 3:07 PM PDT, Ceres is at a distance of 2.158218 AU, where each AU is about 500 light-seconds. (One AU is the average distance between the Sun and the Earth.) So Ceres is currently 1079 light-seconds away. The orbit of Ceres around the Sun is an ellipse with aphelion of 2.98 AU and perihelion of 2.55 AU. When the Earth is on one side of the Sun and Ceres is on the other, our distance apart is about 3.98 AU, and when Ceres and the Earth are closest together, we are only about 1.55 AU distant. You can download the free open-source planetarium program Stellarium to see a representation of the sky and calculate the distance to any astronomical object in its database. And if you can see it, it's in there!

Where is the New Horizons spacecraft now?

It reached the halfway point between Earth and Pluto on February 25, 2010...so as I write this in mid-July 2010, it is a little over halfway to its destination.

What space crafts have visited Pluto?

Amateur-astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto 80 years ago at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. Pluto's demotion in 2006 from a planet to a plutoid upset space enthusiasts all over the world, and trimmed the tail off the mnemonic device for remembering the order of the planets from the Sun: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas." Pluto Day 2010 will cue another burst of anger about the demotion, and will see NASA's New Horizonspacecraft a little closer to the "King of the Kuiper Belt."His finding was confirmed by several other astronomers, and on 13 Mar 1930--the anniversary of Lowell's birth and of William Hershel's discovery of Uranus--the discovery of Pluto was publicly announced. At 1553 miles in diameter, Pluto is smaller than seven moons in the solar system - including our own moon. The path to demotion started after the first Kuiper Belt icy objects were found in 1992, and it became apparent that the diminutive Pluto was closer in size, composition, and orbit to these icy comets than to either the terrestrial planets or Jovian gas giants. Then in 2006 the International Astronomical Union ruled that Pluto is a dwarf planet and coined "plutoid" to describe this distinctive class of Trans-Neptunian Objects. The IAU has been responsible for the naming and nomenclature of planetary bodies and their satellites since the early 1900s. The Kuiper Belt lies beyond Neptune, consists of perhaps tens of thousands of icy objects spread out between 30 and 50 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

What is the name of the object in your solar system that is now called a dwarf planet?

It is planet Pluto. ______________________ There are five "dwarf planets" in our solar system, as of August 2010. There are certainly dozens or hundreds more in the distant parts of our solar systems, but our telescopes are not yet good enough to see them. Pluto was considered a planet until the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified it. Ceres was an asteroid before the IAU reclassified it. The Kuiper Belt Objects later named Eris, Haumea and Makemake were all considered to be candidates for being named the "Tenth Planet" until the IAU came out with its definition of "planet". In fact, it was the discovery of the dwarf planet Eris, originally called "Xena", that caused the IAU to finally come up with a formal definition of "planet". All three of these objects are now considered to be "dwarf planets". There are several other large asteroids that probably deserve "dwarf planet" status as well; Vesta, certainly, and Pallas, and perhaps a few others.

Are we going to have a big earthquake in 2010?

Yep! Many of them, actually! The Earth this year, 2010, is found in a point -within the solar system- where two major -and very important- lines/axis (axes) are going to cross vertically. The first axis is the line forming by the planets Uranus and Saturn. Jupiter is going to join and enrich the alignment, by the end of May 2010. The second axis (a plane*, actually) is the line (a plane) forming by the planets Pluto, Earth, the Sun and the Moon on 26th of June 2010. * The term "line" is accurate enough because in Astrology we deal with the planets as projections (impringes) in the Ecliptic plane. The Lunar Eclipse which is going to happen this very day (26 of June 2010) is suspect for VERY DANGEROUS TERRESTRIAL EVENTS. YES, THIS IS WARNING POSTED by an amateur of Astrology which is conducting astrological research for more than 20 years. BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY SO, that lunar month (15 DAYS BEFORE THE ECLIPSE THROUGH 15 DAYS AFTER THE ECLIPSE) we will witness some kind(s) of DOOMSDAY-S. BE PREPARED. This year, the very year 2010 is the beginning of the "2012" SERIES OF EVENTS. BELIEVE ME, OUR PLANET EARTH CAN'T READ ANY PREDICTION MADE BY ASTROLOGERS LIKE ME. EARTH CAN ONLY FEEL THE COSMIC GRAVITATIONAL / ELECTROMAGNETIC / or whatever PULL. OUR PLANET IS MERELY DANCING LIKE A PUPPET IN THE UNIVERSE. THESE VERY DAYS OF JUNE/JULY 2010 WE'RE GOING TO FEEL THE INSTABILITY OF OUR HOME PLANET.
