One might say the soil in southern Idaho is a great natural resource because it grows the huge, tasty "Idaho Potatoes" Idaho's nickname is the "Gem State". In northern Idaho, you can find star garnets, one of only a few places they are found in the world, there is beryl - mined in certain parts of north Idaho, there is a wonderful selection of very good opals, as well. North Idaho has a lot of trees, so there is a lot of logging. In upper north Idaho, there are several silver mines that also produce a lot of zinc. Gold is present, as well, and is often collected with big, high-pressure dredges from the streams and small rivers. There is an abundance of big game throughout the state, including deer, moose, elk, bear, cougar, mountain goat and sheep. The rivers run clear and clean (One near me is called the Clearwater River), and contain trout - rainbows, cutthroat, browns, and others. There are large lake fisheries in north Idaho for large trout and smaller land-locked salmon. Idaho has some of the best fast-water rafting in the northwest due to the amount of water melting out of the mountains and into the streams. The wealth of tall and snowy mountains in Idaho contribute to the sport of skiing, including the famous Sun Valley area in southeastern Idaho where Bruce Willis lives.
