Why do American sign language signers finger spell?

Fingerspelling is used for several reasons. Fingerspelling is traditionally used to spell out titles of works (such as book titles or names of movies or names of telivision programs, plays etc.), names of people or places that don't have signs, or other words that may not, yet, have a sign in American Sign Language. Fingerspelling may also be used for clarification, so that the other person understands what is being said. Furthermore, fingerspelling may be utilized by people with limited knowledge of American Sign Language Signs to spell out words that they do not know the proper sign for. For example a beginning ASL signer may sign "WHAT SIGN FOR T-O-M-A-T-O?" To which may be responded with a sign showing the answer to the question.

What is the name of fingerspelling only?

The only name I've ever heard it called is fingerspelling. Also called "Manual Alphabet" :-) It is also, though not often, referred to as the " Rochester Method" or "Visible English". A method of deaf education that focuses on fingerspelling and speech. This method gets its name from the fact that it was used for a time as the main method of instruction at the Rochester School for the Deaf (formerly the "Western New York Institute for Deaf Mutes") in Rochester, New York. The Rochester Method is based on standard English. Each English word in a sentence is fingerspelled. This method isn't used much anymore because spelling out each word is a tedious, time-consuming process. (Stewart, 1992)
