The first Englishman and second individual to sail around the world was Sir Francis Drake taking him three years (1577-1580) and marked the beginning of England's challenge to Spain's global domination.
The capture of several Spanish treasure ships en route made Drake a national hero and he was paid £10,000 and knighted at Deptford in 1581. He continued, with the blessing of Elizabeth I, to harass and capture Spanish shipping to add to England's coffers which ultimately lead to the failed Spanish invasion attempt with the Armada in 1588.
The Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan and the Spanish fleet, proved the world was round. They were the first to circumnavigate around the world and complete the first voyage around the world.
Fernaned Megelan was the first person to sail around the world and his crew.
