The capture of several Spanish treasure ships en route made Drake a national hero and he was paid £10,000 and knighted at Deptford in 1581. He continued, with the blessing of Elizabeth I, to harass and capture Spanish shipping to add to England's coffers which ultimately lead to the failed Spanish invasion attempt with the Armada in 1588.
