Peter Minuit
Peter Minuit found New Amsterdam and was the first governor of New Sweden. Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from the Indians.
The first town on Manhattan Island was New Amsterdam, established by the Dutch in 1624. It served as the capital of the New Netherland colony and was primarily a trading post. The settlement was strategically located at the mouth of the Hudson River, fostering trade and commerce. In 1664, the English seized control and renamed it New York.
The Dutch purchased Manahatta from the Lenape Indians of Canarsie (now Brooklyn) in 1626. The colony was renamed New Netherland.
Netherland
New Netherland was first controlled by the Dutch in the early 17th century. The Dutch West India Company established the colony in 1624, primarily for trade and to capitalize on the fur industry. The most notable settlement was New Amsterdam, located on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The Dutch maintained control until 1664, when the English seized the territory and renamed it New York.
New Netherland
First We Take Manhattan was created in 1987.
The Dutch were the first colonists, they called it New Amsterdam. It was they, who famously bought Manhattan from the Indians for $24.00. Eventually the Netherlands ceded the area to England and the British renamed it New York.
The Dutch settled the colony of New Netherland in the first half of the 17th century. The earliest explorations took place between 1609 and 1613, the first of which was by Henry Hudson. The founding of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island took place in 1625, and it remained in Dutch hands until claimed by Britain in 1664. (New York was renamed New Orange when briefly seized again by the Dutch from 1673 to 1674.)
