that fault can come from variety of location some that relate to the intake airflow, verify that all the vacuum hose's have vacuum.

- Turbo waste-gate Vacuum (specially if you do not hear the whistle of the Turbo at about 1500rpm)
In addition I'll recommend to clean the intake unit, I found in mine fair bit of sludge and just by cleaning it there was noticeable improvement in the way that the car pull.

I have a 2001 406 estate (2.0 petrol) and have had this warning several times. Once it was a real fault, diagnostic analyser said it was the downstream oxygen sensor (P0136), and replacing the sensor fixed it. Other times the analyser just says "random misfire" (P0300), once it did this after accidentally stalling the engine and it just clears on its own if the misfire has gone away but this takes a while. Resetting the fault code speeds this process up. If the warning is persistent I recommend buying an analyser and seeing what the underlying problem is. Good luck. John.
