More extensive education is required for those who wish to work in the field of food science research; generally, one must achieve a master's or a doctorate's degree in a related area of study in order to be eligible for such a career. Additionally, certain states require food scientists to be licensed in order to work in certain positions such as food inspection.

The starting salary for food scientists is typically about $34,600 per year. However, this salary will vary greatly depending on one's experience and specialization, and food scientists who possess a very extensive background in their field can earn up to $82,000 annually.
