Sarah Josepha Buell Hale [October 24, 1788-April 30, 1879] lobbied 17 years for a national day of Thanksgiving. As of 1846, she began trying to persuade five presidents of the need and importance of such a day. Her efforts were unsuccessful with 12th U.S. President Zachary Taylor [November 24, 1784-July 9, 1850], 13th U.S. President Millard Fillmore [January 7, 1800-March 3, 1874], 14th U.S. President Franklin Pierce [November 23, 1804-October 8, 1869], and 15th U.S. President James Buchanan [April 23, 1791-June 1, 1868].
Hale succeeded with 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln[February 12, 1809-April 15, 1865]. President Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving Proclamation on October 3, 1863. Before his Proclamation, Thanksgiving mainly had been seen as a New England celebration. But the date of the festivities had varied widely, from October to January. With the Lincoln Proclamation, the date was set uniformly in November.
