People come to the U.S. seeking political asylum mainly because the political situation in their countries is unstable to the point that it threatens their live and/or that of their loved ones. One of the most notable examples is the guerrilla problem in Colombia (it must be said that the current government in that country has taken decisive steps towards fighting this problem) which uprooted thousands of people from their homes and continues to do so, to the point that millions of Colombians left the country just for that reason alone.
