Albert Einstein was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for his discovery of the photo-electric effect.

Curiously enough this work, albeit significant, pales in comparison to his work on relativity and gravity. It is said, however, that the Nobel committee did not understand his theory of general relativity well enough, and therefore awarded the price for one of his 'lesser' contributions to science.
