Check socket for corrosion
Check socket for Power and ground
The problem points to the directional/lights and hazard switch. The brake light wiring is part of that circuit.You can buy the switch after market it is about $70.00.
Could be the brake light switch or fuse.
behind the drivers seat in an air manifold under a plastic cover... but more often than not your problem is in the directional switch as it also controls the brakes and the directionals on single wired units... replace the directional switch
remove the brake caliper and the rotors come right off
In the brake fluid reservior located on top right side of engine.
Remove the wheel and tire assembly and the brake caliper then the brake rotor will slide right off.

on the parking brake theres a bolt on the inner side, screw it inwards until the adjusment is right
The 1999 Mercury Sable license plate light and the right side brake light are on the same fuse. If the fuse was bad neither brake light would work. The problem probably is burnt out lightbulbs.
