The "cover" is actually a cannister. On the very bottom side (that would be the side closest to the ground) there is a little ratchet thing up next to the oil pan that keeps the cannister from turning counter clockwise. You will have to hold the little ratchet thing up while you turn the canister counter-clockwise (I used a flathead screwdriver and it was quite easy). Turn it counter-clockwise until it comes off. Easy as pancakes. Now, here's the part that's really going to suck: that cannister has a removable paper cartridge inside of it. Nobody sells replacements yet. I've contacted the dealership that I got my Vibe from and am waiting for a response back. cmy dealer had filter and purolator makes one. its extremely important to use new o ring that comes with filter, o ring must go in groove at bottom of threads, not against the base .o ring tightenes against sides not the bottom.
If you're sitting in the car, it's on the right hand side of the engine, behind the right front wheel. I found it's easier to change the filter with the wheel off. That way you have room to move the filter after you remove it.
