In a ploy to distract Britain's attention away from Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, he sent a French force to invade Ireland. The French expedition to Ireland was a small one and was contained by British forces in the Fall of 1798.

Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian expedition took place in 1798-1801. He wanted to protect French trading interests there. He also wanted to protect French access to the greater region such as Syria and on to India. On the expedition were scientists who wanted to study Egyptian antiquities. Academic, business/economic, cultural and political interests have always been strong motivators for establishing, and maintaining, a French presence in Egypt.
In 1801, an army under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte was deployed in an Egyptian campaign. In these times some soldiers rebuilding a fort discovered an unusual stone on which ancient scripts were engraved. It was the Rosetta Stone. This was when archeogoly became known in Egypt.
He took the Island of Malta and then invaded Egypt.
