The foreskin is normally too tight to be pulled back until about 4 years of age, but for some boys it may be as late as puberty. You should never attempt to force back a tight foreskin, as this can cause injury and scaring the penis, which can result in phimosis that persists into adulthood. For infants and boys who can not yet slide their foreskin back, simply wash the outside of the penis. Once the foreskin can be slid back, the boy should be taught to pull back the foreskin and wash the head of the penis with soap and warm water, just like any other body part, in his daily bath or shower.
