The gods send the monstrous Sphinx to harass Thebes until defeated by Oedipus in the play "Oedipus Rex" by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).
Specifically, little information about the Sphinx is provided in the play. It is through knowledge of other information sources that background questions about the Sphinx may be answered. Even then, the sources are conflicting about her parentage and her homeland although many tend to agree ultimately on Egyptian or Ethiopian origins.
Some suggest that the Sphinx is the natural daughter of Laius, whose murder takes place just before her arrival at Thebes. Laius' family and people move on in their lives without seeking and punishing the guilty and without carrying out necessary cleansing rituals. The Sphinx's appearance therefore may be foreshadowing of future punishment for such Theban lapses or the first step in the expression of divine wrath.
Oedipus realizes hat the prophecies have all come true.
Oedipus has become the king of Thebes.
"Rex" is Latin for "King". Oedipus Rex means "Oedipus the King".
Thebes is the setting of Oedipus Rex because it is the place where the story begins.
'King' is an English equivalent of 'Rex' in the play 'Oedipus Rex'.
The Sphinx is the name of the monster from whom Oedipus frees Thebes in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, the Sphinx is a monstrous combination of assorted body parts from a woman and wildlife. She has no other name. She appears almost immediately after Theban King Laius is killed while away from Thebes and on a consulting trip to Delphi.
Oedipus is King of Thebes.
The shepherd in Oedipus Rex is the person who rescues Oedipus Rex as a child. The shepherd also confirms the main character's fate.
Oedipus Rex is part of a four part collection of plays, three tradgedies and a comedy. We do not have the Comedy but the three tradgedies are "Oedipus Rex", "Oedipus at Colonus", and "Antigone".
