Australia has gained complete independence from Britain. This was a long process, beginning with Federation, when the six states came together as one federated nation, under an Australian Prime Minister.

As a British Colony and later a British Dominion Australia gradually gained more and more autonomy. It did not achieve full independent Sovereignty until 3 March 1986, when the Australia Acts came into effect, terminating all British jurisdiction over Australia.

Australia technically isn't independent. The Queen is actually the head of state which is why we only have a Prime Minister not a President. Australia became a nation in 1901 to unite all the colonies. They wanted a unified law, a strong defence force from the whole country and an identity. One main but surprising reason is that all the states had slightly different railway tracks which meant trains couldn't travel interstate. They were a major form of transport for supplies and people then. As a nation, the government provided the same tracks for all states.
