Little is known about the authors of the New Testament gospels, but it is widely accepted among theologians and scholars that the authors were not Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The authors were not eyewitnesses to the events they described, nor were they acquaintances of eyewitnesses, writing many decades after the time of Christ.
It appears that each author was writing for a separate community, where only that gospel was in use. Some scholars, but not necessarily a majority, believe that John's Gospel was written within a Gnostic Christian community, and that it was subsequently amended to make it more acceptable to what had by then become mainstream Christianity.
There is no news, in the media, regarding such an event, today.

Power requirement....
The Gospels are important to the church today because they are read in mass to spread the word and they are read by all churches to explain the wonders and relationship with Jesus Christ. The Gospel is what allows the churches to continue mass and every Sunday a part of one of the gospels is read out, so that people understand and do the right thing. Every gospel has a meaning to the wonders of life.
It is the belief that the Divine can be revealed as verbatim messages and commands by those living in the world today.
uniformitarianism
The same as it ever was. A myth. A belief by the ignorant. Unfortunately it is still a belief by some people today
Mainly in India
I do not believe that authorship of the Gospels is an important issue for Christians today. Most Christians have faith and do not question or try to justify that faith. For some Christians, the truth of the Gospels is based on the assumption that they were written by eyewitnesses or close associates of eyewitnesses. It is also based, to some extent, on the assumption that the Gospels are not dependent on each other, thus providing a level of mutual verification. For these Christians it may be an important issue to realise that the Gospels were actually written much later than generally assumed and that the authors were neither eyewitnesses nor close associates of eyewitnesses. It may also be important for them that the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and John are based, directly or indirectly, on the earliest Gospel, Mark.
