Some parts of a stream or lake are deeper than others so they suffer less from droughts. the shallower parts dry up and isolated patches of water remain. these "oxbow" lakes are usually have a deeper center and "streamlets" leading off. This makes the small lake look like an ox. The original term was actually "oxbrow" but was changed to "oxbow" due to mis pronouncing.
