The main reason for the development of NAT was to extend the life of IPv4 until a long term solution (IPv6) to dwindling number of IPv4 addresses could be provided.

Another possible reason is the ability to allow multiple computers to connect to an external network (e.g. the Internet) through a single external IP address thus reducing the cost for connecting to the Internet.

NAT's main use is to translate private ip addresses to public address so they can have access without revealing the private address

NAT helps prevent overload on the router
