Hilton corporate sends out the survey to randomly selected guests, the hotel cannot determine who gets one and who doesn't.
The survey is sent out by Medallia and guests whom receive them rate the hotels based on their stay.
If you get a random survey one thing to keep in mind is that anything below an "8" is failing to the hotel. The other thing to do is grade each area individually. Just because you have one fault at the hotel don't kill all areas.

The best way to improve a SALT score is to talk to the source... The Guest. The more you get out and speak to them the more feedback you can get. While you won't please everyone all the time it at least lets you know the areas you need to improve upon. Of course, the guests also need to be realistic in their expectations and grade the survey according to each question. Some will grade you a 1 in everything because the hotel is older or they have one incident. The only thing this really does is hurt the employees and possibly get people fired that don't deserve it. I mean if the furniture is old giving a 1 in service isn't fair...
